SME Security Review

SME Security Review

SME organisations are a good target for cyber-criminals. There is sufficiently valuable information to make it worth a hacker’s time and the organisation’s protection is typically weaker than that of a large enterprise. A recent study done by the National Cyber Security Alliance found that 90% of SME organisations did not have an IT manager on staff much less a security specialist.

Many SME organisations believe they are too small to target and they also believe they already have sufficient level of protection in place. There is also a perception that cyber security is too expensive and complex to tackle for a small business. Failure to protect an organisation against cyber threats could actually cause it to be suddenly out of business. Yet many small businesses either believe they are not a target or they have sufficient protection in place.

CIO on Call offers a consulting service to carry out a security review because like enterprises, small businesses need to ensure that only authorised traffic and users are allowed to access the network. The review will ensure that only appropriate websites are accessed by users and that policies are in place to protect the network.

Benefits

An SME Security Review will review and provide feedback on the following:

  • Firewall – ensuring only traffic that should be allowed on the network can traverse the network.
  • Application Control and URL Filtering – ensure only allowed applications are used on the network and that only allowed websites can be visited.
  • User Awareness – does the organisation to have policies in place that allow or prohibit what specific people do, based on their identity or role in the business.
  • QoS – Quality of Service to give priority to your most important traffic.
  • IPS – Intrusion Prevention System sufficiently searching the traffic for attacks.
  • Anti-Virus – to block malware such as viruses and worms are prevalent and can cause major damage.
  • Anti-Spam – unwanted email is an issue for any business.
  • Remote Access – is the encryption for the traffic from PC’s and other user device sufficient to protect the network whilst they are in the office or on the road.
  • Site-to-site VPN – If a business has multiple offices, is the VPN encrypting all communications between multiple locations.

Approach

Step 1 – establish a security checklist specific to your organisation based on an initial technical discussion or high-level review (should a technical person not be available).

Step 2 – is to review each of the areas identified in the checklist and provide a score against each area and specific issue.

Step 3 – Identify existing and planned/scheduled mitigations for each issue identified.

Step 4 – Rank the likelihood (low / med / high) of the issue occurring given existing and planned mitigations, and impact if it occurred (low / med / high).

Step 5 – Identify the residual risk (low / med / high) risk = likelihood x impact.

Step 6 – Identify additional possible mitigations to address residual risk, and effort / cost (low / med / high).

Step 7 – Present information to business/client for acceptance / non-acceptance of residual risk.

Step 8 – Acceptance or non-acceptance should specify any conditions or acceptance as is.

Step 9 – Where additional action is required, identify and document action items, owners, and dates where possible.
